Business Technology is something I became interested in while perusing my own small business venture, “Clear that Clutter”. Clear that Clutter is a professional home organization business that I was operating on a small “word of mouth” scale in my local community, El Paso Texas. Prior to perusing my own business, I had recently retired from the United States Air Force (USAF). During my career in the service, I was primarily under the administration career field. Within the administrative career field, I could perform certain roles such as executive support, human resources, and deployment management. While those roles can help you run a functioning business, I was very lost on the foundational components of opening a new business and knew I needed to go back to school and refresh my skillsets. But first, why professional home organization?
I love home organization and showing others how their house can become a home. I love seeing the stress and anxiety leave their body when their home is clean and organized. Ultimately, my goal when organizing someone's space is to get it to a point where it can be the most functioning while still looking aesthetically pleasing at an affordable cost. There are a few different components of home organization that really make my passion whole. One being, instant gratification. With home organization, I can take a single chaotic and cluttered room to a beautiful serene and calming space within a single day. Meaning, I can see the results of my work instantly; it’s such a dopamine fix. I also am an avid problem solver, I like to put the pieces together and make them work. For example, I love Tetris; I could play it all day. Home organization is similar to that. Your clients' belongings are everywhere, and you need to decide where they fit best. And lastly, I love seeing the look on a person's face when I revamp their space into something they can use and live in again. about exploring new ideas and expanding their horizons.
My career in the USAF began when I was 18; I graduated high school, turned 18 and left for the military all within about a ten-day period. Initially my career field was called “Information Management” but through the years progressed to being titled, “Administration”. I have served in three sperate components within the USAF; active-duty, the reserves and the guard (California and Oregon). During my time in the service, I deployed twice to the horn of Africa in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. I was also activated in support of stateside rescue missions such as hurricanes or distressed vessels at sea. My rank upon retirement was Master Sergeant/E7.
Once retired, I moved to El Paso Texas and started volunteering with a local nonprofit for terminally ill children called, “Reach for a Star” where the group grants any wishes they might have while battling their diseases. The wishes this organization has granted in the past include new bedroom sets, vacations, new tablets, and shopping sprees. Through my educational experience at the University of Advancing Technology, I have been able to use some of my new skillsets to help this organization out with things like social media posts, marketing, and digital photography.
Because of my time in the service, I was able to qualify for educational benefits that have allowed me to go back to college and learn about entrepreneurship, business legalities and marketing. And, because of the education I have received at the University of Advancing Technology, I have been able to apply new skills to my everyday life both professionally and through volunteer work. I am grateful for my past work and educational experiences and am ready to apply them moving forward and prospering more.
